Cleaning Toilets Naturally, Without Toxic Chemicals
20 01 2008I recently purchased the book Green This! Volume One: Greening Your Cleaning by Deirdre Imus. It’s filled with information about the harmful chemicals in our cleaning products and natural alternatives.
Cleaning Your Toilet Naturally
Imus says all you need to use for a disinfected toilet is white vinegar. Simply pour one cup in the back of the toilet, and let it sit for thirty minutes before flushing.
Pour vinegar into the bowl and scrub around too.
Be Sure to Clean Your Toilet Brush!
Think of all the nastiness that collects on your toilet brush…gross, right? Although she recommends replacing your toilet brush every six months, I think if you just follow her instructions to clean the brush with hot water, soap and vinegar, it will be fine, and be less wasteful too.

So, you say that white vinegar is good for cleaning. Does that include white wine vinegar? Can you use apple cider vinegar?
That’s a great question, Joe. White vinegar is ideal for cleaning, as it’s cheaper than other vinegars, especially when you buy it in bulk. Although apple cider vinegar has many uses, all of the recipes I’ve read have been for cleaning with white vinegar…why, I do not know!
The white vinegar has been working well. I’ve actually been adding tea tree oil to it, since tea tree oil is a natural antifungal and antibacterial. Plus it helps the smell. Grape fruit seed extract (GSE) is also a very good, natural antifungal. For even better smells, one could use the essential oil of lavender, which has antibacterial properties.
I have used white vinegar, borax, baking soda and tea tree oil for a long time now. I don’t know if that combination is overkill, though! Rather be safe than sorry
Ha ha, that’s funny. I don’t think it sounds like overkill, I think it sounds like a great idea!
